Work is to start next week on the redevelopment of Coventry Transport Museum.

The project will transform 12 of the museum's 14 galleries and will also improve a range of visitor facilities. The work will take 13 months and the museum will stay open while it is being carried out.

The scheme also includes the restoration of the Grade-1 listed Old Grammar School, which has not been used for 30 years. This will feature exhibition, education and events spaces.

Coventry Transport Museum is part of Culture Coventry, the trust set up last year that also includes the city's Herbert Art Gallery and Museum.

Culture Coventry chief executive Gary Hall said work on the plans for the transport museum started more than six years ago.

The redevelopment is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, European Regional Development Fund, Biffa Award and the Garfield Weston Foundation.
