The Social Justice Alliance for Museums was launched today at the Museums Association (MA) conference in Liverpool.

The alliance believes that museums and their collections bring incalculable value to society and that everyone is entitled to benefit from access to the resources and ideas that museums contain.

“Museums have made great strides in modernising and opening up to diverse audiences,” said David Fleming, the director of National Museums Liverpool, one of the founding members of the alliance.

“Museums should play a key role in the pursuit of democracy and social justice. We believe that by joining together with like-minded organisations we can find our voice collectively.”

Maggie Appleton, the chief executive of Luton Culture, another of the founder members, said: “We believe that this should underpin the foundation of every museum.”

There are now about 40 members of the alliance, including Barnsley Museums; Amsterdam Museum; Beamish Museum; the Memorial Museum of Domincan Resistance; Museo Arocena in Mexico; Museum of Copenhagen; and Te Papa Tongarewa, Museum of New Zealand.

Another member is Amguedffa Cymru – National Museum Wales. Its director David Anderson, who is also the president of the MA, said: “I believe that what is 40 or so institutions will become hundreds and eventually thousands, because this is a need that speaks to our time.”
