The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) has moved a step closer to its funding target for the development of an underground gallery on Exhibition Road following a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
The HLF has awarded the V&A nearly £5m, leaving £7m to raise. Other funders for the £42m project include the Monument Trust; Dr Mortimer and Theresa Sackler Foundation; Headley Trust; and the Garfield Weston Foundation.
The space on Exhibition Road will be used for the museum’s temporary exhibition programme and will also include a courtyard and new entrance.
“It is an essential development for the future of the V&A which will transform the way we present our major exhibitions as well as how we welcome our increasing number of visitors,” said Martin Roth, the director of the V&A.
The architect for the scheme is AL_A, which won the international competition to design the project in 2011.
Meanwhile, the V&A opened a centre for the study and care of its textiles and fashion collections this week. The Clothworkers’ Centre at Blythe House in Kensington Olympia was designed by Haworth Tompkins Architects.
