More museum training opportunities will become available following the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) recent announcement that it is investing a further £20m in its Skills for the Future Programme.
This will cover 876 new placements across 39 projects in museums, galleries, archives and other heritage organisations. All the projects have received initial support to apply for a full grant.
“Skills for the Future is one of our most successful and over-subscribed programmes with fierce competition to secure funding,” said HLF chairwoman Jenny Abramsky.
“We’re delighted that through this significant investment 876 new placements will be created right across the UK and hope that this additional funding will help encourage growth and build resilience within the sector.”

The museums and galleries taking part include:
- Chiltern Open Air Museum, which is applying for £220,100 to offer six trainees experience in historic construction and farming skills.
- Natural History Museum, which would use a £460,000 grant to offer 15 places covering a range of collections experience.
- The British Museum has applied for £470,700 for placements for 20 people to learn about a range of museum skills including object handling, storage, learning, outreach and research.
- The Bowes Museum would use a £454,700 grant to create opportunities for 15 people to learn about picture and textile conservation.
- Orleans House Gallery, which is run by the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, would use a £241,000 grant to offer 12 trainees experience in a wide range of heritage skills such as documentation, research and conservation.
- Whitechapel Gallery, London, which has asked for £266,600 to offer 12 trainees experience in a range of skills including research, communications and digital technology.
- Northern Ireland Museums Council, which would spend £366,700 on 10 trainees who will learn how to use collections to connect communities to their heritage.
- National Galleries of Scotland has asked for £613,0000 for 12 collections traineeships.
- Museums Galleries Scotland is applying for £432,900 to support a £513,000 museum traineeship programme for 20 people.
