The Heritage Lottery Fund has launched a £125m grant programme to support the redevelopment of unused historic buildings.

This follows an HLF report, New Ideas for Old Buildings, that highlighted the commercial potential of unused historic buildings.

The Heritage Enterprise scheme will provide at least £25m a year for not-for-profit organisations to work in partnership with the private sector to return neglected buildings to productive use. Grants from £100,000 to £5m are available.

There is also a limited amount of money available to support capital works, such as urgent repairs to prevent deterioration of a building, while a project is being planned.

For grants of less than £2m, applicants should contact their local HLF office. The first deadline for grants between £2m and £5m is 13 June. Decisions will be taken by HLF’s board of trustees. The next deadline is 8 August.

Meanwhile, the British Library has become the first UK institution to make an acquisition under the Cultural Gifts Scheme, which the Department for Culture, Media and Sport launched in March to allow people and companies to donate cultural treasures in return for a reduction in their tax liability.

The museum has added to its collection of Beatles memorabilia under the scheme.

The Cultural Gifts Scheme is administered by Arts Council England. It allows owners of objects or collections of objects to donate them during their lifetime, rather than after their death, as with the Acceptance in Lieu Scheme.
