A former director of Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry (Mosi) has launched plans for a £38m science centre in Oxford.

Ian Griffin, who left Mosi in 2008, is the chief executive at Science Oxford, which submitted a planning application last week to build what it describes as the “UK’s first integrated science discovery and innovation centre”.

The Magnet has been designed by Fosters + Partners and will be built in the centre of Oxford, next to Castle Mound.

Science Oxford hopes the centre will attract over 150,000 visitors each year, including 30,000 schoolchildren.

It will feature displays, events and lectures and will include a planetarium. Visitors will be charged for entry, although the details are still being finalised.

“The Magnet will reinforce Oxford’s position at the heart of science and innovation in the UK whilst also generating jobs and income for the local area,” said Griffin.

According to a statement from Science Oxford, The Magnet will generate income of more than £128m in Oxford over the next ten years and create over 100 skilled jobs.

Construction is expected to start in 2014 for an opening in summer 2015. Science Oxford has so far raised £10m to support the project.

Science Oxford is the public face of The Oxford Trust, an educational charity that was established in 1985.

Griffin left Mosi in 2008 shortly after launching a £54m redevelopment plan for the museum.
