The opening of the £4m Media Space at the Science Museum in London has been delayed by three months after a number of setbacks to the project.

The gallery, which will showcase the national photography collection, is a collaboration between the Science Museum and the National Media Museum (NMM), which are both part of the Science Museum Group.

Media Space was going to open in June but will now open in September as its development has been affected by a restructuring at the NMM, including the departure of its director Colin Philpott in April last year.

Also, Media Space project director Charlotte Cotton resigned in March 2012. Hannah Redler, who leads the Science Museum’s arts programme is now the head of the gallery.

A statement from the Science Museum said: "There have been many changes throughout the history of the project. All of these have had an impact and the project has started on-site later than anticipated.

"Taking into account contingency time for delays we felt that there was too short a time to realistically finish the build and install the first exhibitions in time for June opening."

The first exhibition at the Media Space was to have been Revelations: Experiments in Photography, but this has been changed to one on Tony Ray-Jones, an English-born photographer who died in 1972. It is being curated by photographer Martin Parr alongside Greg Hobson, curator of photographs at the NMM.

As well as showcasing the national photography collection, Media Space will also invite photographers, artists and the creative industries to respond to the wider collections of the Science Museum Group to explore visual media, technology and science.
