Manchester’s Whitworth Art Gallery is one of three visual arts projects to have passed a first-stage application for Arts Council England’s (ACE) large-scale capital funding programme.

The other two visual arts schemes were the Triangle Arts Trust in London, which has asked for £1m, and the Milton Keynes Theatre and Gallery Company, which is seeking nearly £3m.

The Whitworth has asked for £1.8m as part of a £15.4m redevelopment. All 20 applicants will have to complete a stage-two application within 18 months.

ACE is spending £214.6m on capital grants of more than £500,000 over four years. The money is mainly for national portfolio organisations, although other bodies can apply with the agreement of their regional office.

In the first round of funding in March, 26 projects were given first-stage passes for a share of £114m. These included projects by York Museums Trust and Tate St Ives.

There is a £50m budget for the second round of funding and £50m for the final round, which will open in 2013-14.

ACE also announced that 35 organisations successfully applied for its small capital grants scheme (£100,000-£500,000). There is £12m available for the first round of funding. Another £8m will be available in the next round, which is due to open in 2013-14.

Organisations that gained small capital grants included Firstsite in Colchester; Ikon Gallery in Birmingham; South London Gallery; Story Museum in Oxford; and Southend-on-Sea Borough Council for its Focal Point Gallery.
