The Collections Trust securing €8m from the European Commission for a series of projects to help cultural organisations share collections online is a reminder that UK museums can tap into overseas sources of funding.
The Collections Trust money includes €3.8m for Europeana Inside, a scheme to develop opensource tools to help cultural institutions manage the sharing of collections online.
Partage Plus will receive €3m to digitise art nouveau artefacts and architecture. Further funding will go to Enumerate, a three-year project assessing the digitisation of the 36 EU states’ cultural heritage.
Linked Heritage will help organisations share their digitised collections of books, paintings, films, museum objects and archival records on the Europeana website. All these projects come under the European Union’s Framework Programme, which covers science, engineering and technology.
A €400m cultural funding strand is also available, which runs from 2007 to 2013. The aim is to celebrate Europe’s cultural diversity and enhance our shared cultural heritage.
Visiting Arts is the contact point for those who want to fund out more about cultural funding in the UK. The programme is for projects involving at least three partner organisations from different countries.
Other funding sources include the European Regional Development Fund. Managed by the Department for Communities and Local Government, it is aimed at regeneration projects promoted primarily by the public sector.
