Money for staff to travel to conferences and other professional development events is one of the areas that is often cut as part of budget reductions.

But there are still some sources of support for museum and gallery staff who want to attend events in the UK and overseas.

Arts Council England (ACE) has launched the Artists International Development Fund to help English artists to travel and collaborate internationally.

The £750,000 fund, which has been developed in partnership with the British Council, is now open for applications.

It is a very targeted grant scheme, but an ACE spokesman said that even though ACE did not have any specific funding for museum staff to travel to events, some Subject Specialist Network funding has been used to support travel bursaries.

But some organisations do have specific funds to support travel to conferences.
The Federation of Museums and Art Galleries of Wales has just announced that money is available to help members attend the Association of Independent Museums conference (14-16 June).

The same funding stream can also be used to visit the Museums Association (MA) conference in Edinburgh (8-9 November).

The MA itself manages the Trevor Walden Trust, which provides financial help for members taking the Associateship of the MA. This can include support for people to attend subject-specific conferences.

Museums Galleries Scotland provides travel bursaries to curators and collections managers working in its member museums, including for attendance at conferences.
