A Treasury windfall and a delay in the British Museum's North West Development have put Tate Modern's extension back on track.
A £100m shortfall in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport's (DCMS) capital budget had threatened grants of £22.6m to the British Museum (BM) and £62.8m to the Tate (see link below).
But a DCMS spokesman said the Treasury had agreed to fund the Tate's £60m, while another £10m had been found from "efficiency savings". The refusal of planning permission for the BM's extension had also helped.
"We have been helped by some of the projects moving to a longer timescale," he said. "The BM was originally due to finish next year, but it will now be 2011-12 because of the planning difficulties."
