The Natural History Museum at Tring has been targeted by thieves who have stolen more than 300 tropical bird skins. The specimens were stolen in late June and include several that are of special scientific interest.
The museum's director of science, Richard Lane, said it was distressing that the collection had been targeted.
"We take the security of our collections very seriously and are working with our internal security team and the police in investigating this incident," he added.
