'Arty kids retain interest'

An Arts Council England report has found that being encouraged to participate in the arts as a child boosts the chances of involvement in the arts as an adult. Encourage Children Today to Build Audiences for Tomorrow, which is based on evidence from the Taking Part survey, also said parental encouragement depends on family background.

Scottish gallery gets £4.5m

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery has received £4.5m in the latest round of Heritage Lottery Fund awards. The money will allow it to double its gallery space. Meanwhile, Experience Barnsley, a project to create a museum and archives centre, has received £2.6m.

MLA boosts learning

The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) has launched a £100,000 challenge fund to encourage museums, libraries and archives to open their spaces to learners. The fund will provide £5,000 grants to the organisations with the best ideas to help groups of learners use their facilities. The MLA has also endorsed the government's Learning Revolution white paper and set a target of signing up 3,000 museums, libraries and archives to promote informal adult learning.

Ecsite-uk rebrands

Ecsite-uk has changed its name to the Association for Science and Discovery Centres. The board hopes the name will better reflect the organisation's role to promote and support UK science and discovery centres.
