The Art Fund has launched an online survey that aims to gauge how museums and galleries are coping during the economic downturn.

"Questions are devised to help identify trends and to engage debate about where the priorities of government and funding bodies lie," said an Art Fund spokeswoman. More than 300 museums have completed the poll. The survey will be repeated every three months, with the findings to be published later this year.

An Arts Council England (ACE) spokeswoman said: "We welcome any move that will increase the sector's knowledge of the effect the recession is having and will continue to have on arts organisations across the country."

She said ACE is sponsoring a seminar, Maximising the Importance of Arts and Culture Throughout the Economic Downturn, which addresses the same issues, at the Royal Commonwealth Society on 24 April.

Meanwhile, Art Fund director David Barrie is to step down in May after 17 years leading the organisation. In a statement, Barrie said: "I remain committed to this great cause and hope that the organisation will continue to prosper. I have no definite plans, but I do not intend to retire - at least, not yet."

Barrie's successor has yet to be appointed.
