Capital cultural gains
Six months into its tenure as European Capital of Culture, some 5 million people have attended a cultural event or attraction in Liverpool. Tate Liverpool had its busiest ever month in June, attracting 140,000 people, many of them coming for the Klimt show (pictured). National Museums Liverpool has had almost 1.2 million people through its doors since January.
Olympiad events begin
More than 100 museums, libraries and archives have signed up to take part in the Cultural Olympiad, which begins with the handover from the Beijing Games on 24 August. Led by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, the Setting the Pace programme will include
a series of events at museums around the UK. See www.london2012.com
Oral project wins grant
The Big Lottery Fund has awarded £590,000 to Their Past Your Future in Scotland. The money will be used to capture oral history, focusing on world war two and subsequent conflicts. The initiative is led by a partnership including the Imperial War Museum, the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, and the Northern Ireland Museum Council.
Soriano goes to RA
Kathleen Soriano will take up the post of director of exhibitions at the Royal Academy in London from January next year. She is currently the director of Compton Verney in Warwickshire, where she has been in post since spring 2006. Before that she was at the National Portrait Gallery.
