Carlisle's Tullie House Museum plans to move to charitable trust status to ring-fence its budget and help fund possible expansion. The museum's executive and the city council have agreed the move in principle. A vote will be taken in the autumn.
Museum director Hilary Wade said the process would take between 18 months and two years. "It is a council decision, but it will enable us to ringfence the budget and have a certain amount of financial autonomy," she added. "It is not a money-saving exercise."
Wade said existing funding amounted to "a couple of million", but a report by ABL consultants had recommended a £14m overhaul of Tullie House. "It will open the door for external funding we can't access under the local authority," she said.
