Cardiff reopens galleries
Cardiff Castle has opened a £6m Interpretation Centre and reopened galleries not used since the second world war. Set into earth banks, the centre provides visitors with an introductory film followed by a walk through the galleries, which were last used as air raid shelters. The castle's total £8m conservation and development project is supported by a £6.7m Heritage Lottery Fund grant.
Aberdeen budget cuts
Budget cuts at the city council have forced Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums to close its four sites one day a week in a bid to save £107,000. They will, however, open on bank holidays. Art gallery and museums manager Christine Rew said: "We have taken action to take services out to the public in a different way." Display cases will go into community venues when the closures start this summer.
Creative Scotland Bill
The future of Creative Scotland, the national body that was to replace the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Screen, is in doubt after MSPs voted against the financial arrangements of the Bill. The implications of this will be analysed in next month's Museums Journal.
Flood damage in Swindon
Archive material at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery was damaged by a leak after lead was stolen from its roof. Rainwater fell on photographs, maps and plans of the town, forcing the temporary closure of the museum. But no permanent damage was done.
