Apprentice scheme backed
The government has backed plans to train 5,000 "creative apprentices" by 2013 for sectors such as heritage and design. The scheme has been developed by the sector skills council, Creative & Cultural Skills. On-the-job training will be provided by organisations such as English Heritage and the National Trust.
Darwin artists unveiled
Ten artists including Mark Wallinger, Rachel Whiteread and Richard Wentworth have been shortlisted to create a permanent work based on the ideas of Charles Darwin (above) for the Natural History Museum in London.
The proposals for Darwin's Canopy will go on show at the museum in June. The winning work is to be unveiled on Darwin's 200th birthday in February 2009. Twelve artists will also be invited to spend time in the Galapagos Islands, where Darwin discovered several species. Both projects are sponsored by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
Family award shortlist
The shortlist for the Guardian Family Friendly Museum Award has been announced. The finalists are Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Shetland Museum, Dulwich Picture Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery and Weston Park Museum. The winner will be announced on 30 April. Green audit for Eureka!
The environmental consultancy EnviroFutures is working with Eureka! The Museum for Children, in Halifax, to help reduce its carbon footprint. An audit will examine the museum's use of resources, processes and waste output.
