Birmingham's Ikon Gallery plans to open a museum of contemporary art in 2012. The collection will be drawn from the gallery's temporary exhibitions programme, which features rising artists from around the world.

Ikon Gallery director Jonathan Watkins said: "It is amazing how under-resourced Birmingham is as far as visual arts is concerned."

He said he would like a new-build gallery designed by a leading international architect, although he did not want to put a figure on the cost at this stage.

Ikon is in the early stages of planning the project, before commissioning a feasibility study. It hopes to have secured a high-profile location in central Birmingham by the end of the year.
