Plans for a national theatre museum in Blackpool have moved forward following the Department for Culture, Media and Sport's decision to provide £50,000 for a feasibility study.
The project follows the Victoria and Albert Museum's (V&A) closure of its Theatre Museum in London in January this year.
The museum in Blackpool would feature items from the V&A's theatre collection, although the London museum plans to open a permanent gallery for its artefacts in 2009.
Blackpool Council and the V&A, which have been in talks since late 2006 (Museums Journal January 2007, p6), were meeting as Museums Journal went to press.
The study is looking at whether a new building is needed. Various locations in the town are being considered.
The V&A is also involved in a feasibility study into setting up a museum in Dundee in partnership with Scottish Enterprise, the University of Dundee and Dundee City Council.
