The newly rebranded Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI - rhymes with cosy) has unveiled its £54m redevelopment plan.
The Revolution MOSI project includes the creation of an eco-friendly building and a road-transport gallery, as well as a revamp of the Air and Space Gallery.
Director Ian Griffin said the museum, which was designed for 250,000 visitors a year but will welcome more than 600,000 in 2007, was "stretched to breaking point". He added that it was more than just a capital project.
"In a society where people are turning away from science, we can make it relevant to people's lives," he said.
Although no money has been committed, Griffin is confident the development will go ahead. Funding is being sought from the North West Regional Development Agency, Heritage Lottery Fund and corporate sponsors
