The Royal Armouries in Leeds is targeting teenagers with a No To Knives (NTK) campaign. The armouries is encouraging a million young people to "pledge against the edge" via its website.

The campaign will use social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook to "emphasise that carrying a knife is not cool".

Museum director Peter Armstrong said it is the responsibility of every museum to look at how its own collection can benefit the community.

"It is not just about opening your doors and letting people look at things in glass cases," he said. "It is about how you use those objects to make a difference.

"We are aware of what they [knives] can do and therefore want to pass that information on to people."
