Among the 150 heritage lots auctioned last month were the chance to learn sword fighting at the Royal Armouries Museum (sold for £500) and the opportunity to become a miner for the day at the National Coal Mining Museum for England (£107).

Ironbridge Gorge MRichard Sandell, the deputy head of the department of museum studies at Leicester University has raised doubts over how data for a recent analysis of entry-level jobs by the Museums Association (MA) was gathered.

Sandell said the analysis, by the MA's deputy director, Maurice Davies, which found that 90% of Diversify trainees find a "reasonable job" compared with 40% of other museums studies graduates, creates a "misleading picture".

"Our knowledge of career destinations shows a similar trajectory for Diversify and all other students," he said. Davies defined a "reasonable job" as one "you would expect to require an MA in museums studies to do".
