The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London were the biggest winners in this year's DCMS/Wolfson Foundation capital grants round to improve access and understanding of the UK's cultural heritage. Each museum will receive £300,000.
Some 43 museums, ranging from university museums, national and regional museums, and designated collections were successful. Each year, the DCMS/Wolfson Foundation Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund allocates £4m to capital projects.
Other recipients were: the Tank Museum in Bovington - £100,000 for its Discovery Centre; the People's History Museum, Manchester - £60,000 to improve the temporary gallery and create a new community gallery; Tullie House in Cumbria for work on its rare Amati violin; and the Wiltshire Heritage Museum in Devizes - £11,000.
Paul Robinson, the curator at the Wiltshire Heritage Museum, said it had bid for just over £100,000. "This [funding] kick-starts an important project for us to improve access, particularly for children and people with disabilities," said Robinson.
The fund, now in its sixth year, has awarded a total of £20m to museums and galleries.
