The fifth Gulbenkian prize longlist was announced in London at the end of last month. The ten-strong list is made up of new openings and museums and galleries that have undergone refurbishments, redisplays or opened exhibitions during 2006.
The ten finalists are: Braintree District Museum, Warner Textile Archive, Braintree, Essex; De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex; New Aquarium, Horniman Museum, London; Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow; Kew Palace, Surrey; Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, West Sussex; Scotland and Medicine: Collections and Connections, Edinburgh; Jameel Gallery of Islamic Art, Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Weston Park Museum, Sheffield; and Prostitution: What's Going On?, a temporary exhibition at the Women's Library, London.
Francine Stock, the chairwoman of the Gulbenkian judges, said: 'We were impressed by the way these entries seek to engage audiences. This is a truly inspiring long list and the next stage of our judging process will be a really tough challenge.'
The four-strong shortlist will be drawn up in the spring and the winner of the £100,000 prize will be announced in May.
