London's design museum is considering relocating to a site that the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) has earmarked for an extension, Museums Journal can reveal.
'The V&A is considering the development of its Exhibition Road site,' a V&A spokeswoman said. 'The possibility of the Design Museum occupying a substantial part of the Exhibition Road site is being explored.'
The V&A has identified three uses for the Boilerhouse Yard site on Exhibition Road: modern exhibition galleries; a 20th-century gallery; and a fashion gallery.
The Design Museum announced plans for a £50m relocation in January 2006. One of the locations it was looking at was next to Tate Modern, but this was abandoned due to the complexity of the site (Museums Journal July 2006, p7).
The Boilerhouse Yard site at the V&A is one of the options the Design Museum is considering. Another is staying where it is and extending. The Design Museum opened in 1981 in a gallery in the basement of the V&A before moving to its current home in Shad Thames in 1989.
