Partnership working is nothing new to our sector, but we can all agree that it is becoming increasingly important, unlocking new funding opportunities and reaping the benefits of sharing skills, economies of scale and much more.

Balanced against this are the challenges of developing and delivering effective partnerships, and working with radically new partners from outside our sector.

In forming the Cumbria Museum Consortium two years ago, we were determined that the benefits should extend to the wider museum community in Cumbria, as well as throughout our own organisations.

We saw this as particularly important in a large rural county, with many small museums that have strong community links and operate in a well-developed visitor economy.

In this context, joint working within Cumbria and with national, regional and other partners is closely linked to workforce development and a new willingness to share skills and ideas.

The Cumbria Museum Consortium is hosting a one-day conference on partnerships, on 20 March, at the Rheged Centre in Penrith.

Chaired by Maurice Davies, it will feature keynote sessions led by Arts Council England’s director of museums, John Orna-Ornstein, and Martin Roth, director of the Victoria and Albert Museum. The aim is to stimulate discussions that will help all of us make the best of these exciting new strategic opportunities.
