Nick Merriman steps down as chief executive of English Heritage

Nick Merriman has stepped down as chief executive of English Heritage after around 18 months in the role.

In a statement this week, the heritage charity said that “regrettably, Nick decided to do this for personal reasons relating to family health”.

“English Heritage’s Board of Trustees wishes Nick and his family all the very best for the future and would like to thank him for all he has contributed to the charity,” added the statement.

Merriman said: “I have loved my time at English Heritage and wish the charity all the best for a successful future.”

Merriman joined English Heritage in January 2024. As chief executive, he oversaw a major restructure of the charity earlier this year that saw its workforce of 2,535 employees shrink by 7%, or around 189 roles.

The restructure also introduced winter closures and limited opening times at some of the 400 sites cared for by the charity.

The organisation said the restructure was necessary in order to ensure it remained financially resilient and could fulfil its charitable purposes amid a challenging financial environment.

In an official statement to staff, reported by the Guardian, chair of the trustees, Gerard Lemos, said: “I am sorry to say that Nick has requested to step down from his role as chief executive for personal reasons relating to family health. The board has agreed to his request, which will take place with immediate effect. The board would like to thank Nick for everything he has done.”

He added: “Since February 2024, Nick has led English Heritage through a challenging time, during which he has overseen a major change programme aimed at delivering financial sustainability.”

The Guardian reported concerns and “resentment” among former and current staff over how the restructure was carried out and its impact on the organisation.

The board has appointed Geoff Parkin to serve as interim chief executive. Parkin has worked with English Heritage on a pro-bono basis over the last year, alongside acting as non-executive chair of two travel businesses. He has experience within the travel, tourism and leisure industries including at LEK Consulting, British Airways and American Express.
