The Mackintosh House, part of the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow, will introduce an admission fee of £5.00, and a £3 concession entry fee, on 18 March.
The house is funded by Glasgow University, using money from the Scottish Funding Council.
A spokeswoman for the house said: “The Mackintosh House is an amazing resource, but it’s expensive to maintain. That’s why we’re bringing in admission charges.”
The house previously charged entry until 2012. The spokeswoman said that the change to allowing free entry had not noticeably impacted on visitor numbers.
The money raised from the admission charge will go towards staffing and maintenance of the house.
“We’re not doing this to make a profit,” said the spokeswoman. “The Hunterian collections will remain free to view by the public, and we’re including access to the guided tours of Mackintosh House within the price of a ticket, which is very good value for money.”
