Grayson Perry, Spencer Tunick and Amy Sharrocks are among the line-up of 10 artists taking part in Connect10, a national competition that pairs artists with museums and heritage sites across the UK.
As part of the Museums at Night festival, run by Culture24, museums and galleries will bid for an artist to stage an event at their venue.
London’s Freud Museum and York Museums Trust are two of the organisations competing for 2003 Turner Prize winner Perry, who said he would lend himself to the winning museum “for them to do with him as they see fit”.
The Courtauld Gallery and the Museum of Soho in London are also shortlisted to host Perry during the event.
Royal Pavilion and Museums in Brighton and Hove, the Jerwood Gallery in Hastings and the Georges House Gallery in Folkestone could host a new work by Spencer Tunick, which will feature 250 volunteers in a nude photo shoot.
Amy Sharrocks, who previously created a live artwork where 50 people swam across London via 15 lakes, lidos and pools, could be won by one of four venues – the Swansea museum, the Museum of Carpet in Kidderminster, Gallery Oldham and the Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston.
The other artists taking part in the competition are Rankin; Matt Pyke; Fred Deakin; Alex Hartley; Janette Parris; Mr Smith's Letterpress Workshop; and Jessica Voorsanger.
Nick Stockman, Culture24's campaigns manager, said: “Connect10 is the only national culture and heritage project that immerses all those involved in the creation and realisation of new art in unusual settings.
"Participating venues engage deeply with audiences and artists, building long-term relationships which result in lasting legacy.”
A public vote will be held this month to decide which venues will win the artists they have bid for.
The winning museums will be awarded £2,000 to support their event. The other shortlisted organisations will receive a small grant to put towards a Museums at Night event.
Connect10 is funded by Arts Council England to support venues to try something different to attract new audiences to their Museum at Night event. In 2013, over 30,000 members of the public voted to win an artist for their town or city.
Previous events have included Jake and Dinos Chapman playing Exquisite Corpses at the Jerwood Gallery in Hastings, Gavin Turk creating an Egyptian themes art experience at Bristol Museum and Polly Morgan performing live taxidermy in the Victoria Gallery and Museum in Liverpool.
