Austria: The director of the Leopold Museum in Vienna, Tobias Natter, has resigned in protest after the museum’s managing director, Peter Weinhäupl, was appointed chairman of the new Gustav Klimt Foundation. The foundation is linked to the estate of Gustav Ucicky, a Nazi propaganda film-maker.
France: After numerous delays, the reopening of the Picasso Museum in Paris has been postponed until spring next year. The building, which is in the Marais district, has been closed for four years. The $70m project will mean the museum will treble in size to about 54,00sq m.
Iraq: A former palace owned by the late dictator Saddam Hussein in Basra is due to reopen in spring 2015 as a new museum. The museum will relocate from a historic building in the centre of the city. John Curtis, the keeper of the Middle East collections at the British Museum, is advising on the project.
Taiwan: A museum dedicated to modern art and designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando has opened. The Asia Museum of Modern Art is located on the campus of the University of Asia in the city of Taichung. The collection includes works by French sculptor Rodin and late French artist Arman.
Turkey: Turkey’s largest museum complex, which will cover 200,000sq m, is due to open in the next year. The Haleplibahçe museum centre, based in the south-eastern city of Sanliurfa, will incorporate an archaeology museum and park, and the Edessa mosaics museum.
US: The Queens Museum of Art in New York reopened last month following a two-and-a-half year refurbishment. The $68m renovation has doubled the size of the museum, which is best known for its large-scale model of New York City, called the Panorama. The revamp includes new artist studios and expanded gallery space for contemporary art shows.
US: A New York State Supreme Court judge ruled in October that the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s suggested admission fee does not violate its original lease with the city, which was drafted in 1876. “Admission to the Met is de facto free for all,” wrote Judge Shirley Werner Kornreich, because “a de minimis contribution of a penny is accepted”.
