A strike by members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union in Scotland last month caused a drop in visitor figures to the National Museum of Scotland.

“Due to industrial action, the National Museum of Scotland closed at 1pm on the afternoon of Friday 5 April,” said a spokesman for National Museums Scotland.

“Total visitor numbers were accordingly down by just under 60% in comparison with the equivalent day last year, the last Friday of the Scottish schools Easter holiday.”

The PCS said it took industrial action in protest at the UK government’s cuts to salaries and pensions. The union’s campaign began on 20 March, when it called a 24-hour strike.

A PCS spokeswoman said a third day of strikes was planned for this month.
