Steve Miller is to become the new head of Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service (NMAS) following the retirement of Vanessa Trevelyan at the end of this month.

Miller, the chief executive of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust in Shropshire, will join NMAS in June. Before Ironbridge he was the director of the Norton Priory Museum Trust in Cheshire.

Miller told Museums Journal: "It is a fantastic service and from what I've read and understand from the interview it looks like a service that is strongly rooted in its communities but also has international potential.

"The diversity of the sites and the spread of the operations and the collection were a huge appeal to me."

Miller has been a member of the European Cultural Parliament since 2008 and is a cultural leadership fellow of the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts. He has represented Ironbridge on the National Museum Directors’ Council and on the council for the Association of Independent Museums.

Trevelyan, the outgoing president of the Museums Association, is retiring after nearly 40 years in the museum sector.

Robin Hanley, Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service western area manager, will take interim charge of the service until Miller arrives in June.
