National Museums Scotland (NMS) is to close the National Museum of Costume at Shambellie House, Dumfries.
Gordon Rintoul, NMS director, said: “The low number of visitors to the site, along with high operational costs, is simply not sustainable. In addition, the domestic layout of Shambellie House places limitations on it being used effectively as a national museum.”
But Russell Brown, MP for Dumfries and Galloway, said: “Although NMS has gone through a token consultation exercise over the past few weeks, it was clear that unless the Scottish government intervened, Shambellie would close.”
The museum attracts 10,000 visitors a year, and costs £220,000 to run.
Currently closed for the winter, it will not reopen for the spring season.
