National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) has received works by Goya Rembrandt, Cézanne and Picasso from the estate of a South African psychiatrist. Henry Walton, who died in July, bequeathed most of his holdings to NGS.

The estate, which also included ancient Chinese art and Japanese prints, is worth £1.8m, according to The Scotsman newspaper. Walton amassed works with his late wife Sula, and requested that a trust fund be established in their name.

An NGS spokesman said: “The intention of the fund is to benefit the arts, through the purchase and display of works of art for the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.”

Part of the collection was exhibited at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2010.
