Plans for a £35m museum in Southend suffered a blow in June after the council failed to complete an environmental screening report.

A campaign led by the Clifftown Conservation Association forced the council to rethink the scheme.

“The lack of an environ-mental screening report was the basis of a last-minute legal challenge that led to the planning application being withdrawn from the last Development Control committee meeting,” said a council spokesman.

A report has since been commissioned. Once it is finalised, the planning application will be submitted to the next meeting of the Development Control committee.

The new museum is set to be located in the cliff gardens above Western Esplanade. But local press reports state that more than 1,500 people have signed a petition opposing the project on the proposed site.

The scheme will be discussed at the next council meeting on 19 July. The museum would house the Prittlewell Prince Anglo-Saxon treasures and Beecroft Art Gallery’s collection.
