The British Empire and Commonwealth Museum (BECM) is close to completing its search for discrepancies in its 553,000-item collection, following the revelation last year that some objects had been disposed of without the knowledge and agreement of trustees.
BECM’s chair of trustees, Neil Cossons, said: “The audit has been completed and we are currently undergoing a period of reconciling their findings against our own records.
“It is the responsibility of the BECM to resolve all outstanding issues, and we hope to conclude this over the new few months.
“It is the intention of the board of trustees to close the organisation once all matters have been successfully concluded.”
The bulk of the BECM’s collection, for which there is documentation, has now been transferred to Bristol Museums.
