Sefton Council has recommended two “at risk” collections of stuffed birds be transferred to a trust set up by the British Historical Taxidermy Society (BHTS).
The Echalaz Collection is unfit for display and has been in storage since 1999, while the Pennington Collection, also at risk of deterioration, was previously on display at the now closed Botanic Gardens Museum in Southport.
National Museums Liverpool had proposed taking some of the collections. But last month, councillor Mike Booth recommended the collections be kept intact through the BHTS’s trust.
Sefton Council and accredited museums will have access to the collections, and the BHTS will not be able to dispose of items.
The Museums Association’s ethics committee has advised all parties on the decision.
