HLF announces £15m of grants
Grants awarded to William Morris Gallery, Cromford Mills, York Minster, and Aerofilms
Grants worth £15m have been awarded to four museum and heritage projects, the Heritage Lottery Fund announced on Monday.
The William Morris Gallery in London was the only museum winner in this round receiving £1.5m for a renovation and redevelopment project that received a first-round pass in March 2009.
A spokesman at the Waltham Forest council, which runs the gallery and matched the £1.5m, said it was a “significant boost”.
The remainder of the £15m funds were awarded to York Minster’s conservation project (£9.7m), Cromford Mills, cited as the world’s first successful water-powered cotton spinning mills, built in 1771 in Derbyshire (£2m), and a UK-wide initiative Britain from Above: Aerofilms depicting aerial photographic views of Britain from 1919 to 2006 (£1.7m).
Carole Souter, the chief executive of the HLF, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to invest in such a breadth of heritage projects – from the traditional to the more modern – and for that investment to be able to reach all four corners of the UK.”
A further six projects were given a first-round pass. They include, The New Design Museum in London (£4.9m), the National Museum of the Royal Navy (£1.2m), and monastic buildings called the Hexham Abbey Project at Northumberland (£1.8m).
