Slavery museum revamp

The International Slavery Museum in Liverpool has received planning permission for a £6m extension. The institution will expand into an adjacent building, the Dock Traffic Office, which will house a new resource centre. The scheme has been designed by Liverpool architects Austin-Smith: Lord.

Design Museum architect

Architect John Pawson has won the competition to transform the former Commonwealth Institute in west London (pictured above) into a new home for the Design Museum. The winning design team, which also includes structural engineer Ove Arup & Partners, will provide a masterplan incorporating temporary and permanent exhibition spaces plus education facilities.

ACE’s new London chair

Former journalist Veronica Wadley has been named London chair at Arts Council England (ACE). The move, backed by London mayor Boris Johnson, was vetoed last year by former Labour culture secretary Ben Bradshaw. When she was editor of the Evening Standard, Wadley supported Johnson’s election campaign.
