Tate is to merge its learning teams at Tate Britain and Tate Modern to create a single department across both sites.

The move will be overseen by Anna Cutler, previously head of learning at Tate Modern, who has been appointed to the new post of director of learning.

“We aim to ensure that learning is central to the life of Tate and that we develop a vision for learning for the future,” said a spokeswoman. “We want to build a Tate-wide approach and to establish learning as a collaborative process across all four Tate galleries and Tate Media. The senior management structure for this department is still being finalised.”

When asked whether the restructure would result in staff cuts in the department, she said: “The driver is to put learning firmly at the heart of Tate by putting the department at directorate level. The driver is not to make cuts.”

There are currently 51 full- and part-time staff in the learning departments at Tate Britain and Tate Modern. A further 10 staff are employed at Tate Liverpool, with six at Tate St Ives.

Felicity Allen is currently head of learning at Tate Britain.
