Museums and galleries are likely to be the first target for local authority spending cuts, a survey has found.
The poll by Comres for the Local Government Chronicle showed that a third of councillors said museums and galleries should be the priority in cutting the public sector deficit. The sector tied with tourism for first place, with leisure services coming third with 24 per cent.
The poll looked at which authorities were keenest on making museums and galleries bear the brunt of any cost-cutting. Top of the list were councillors from London boroughs, 36 per cent of whom said the sector should be targeted. They were followed by unitary authorities (34 per cent), district councillors (33 per cent) and metropolitan authority councillors (26 per cent).
