The Museums Association (MA) is undergoing a review of its activities as a result of the recession, it was announced last month.

Mark Taylor, director of the MA, told the association's annual general meeting in October that "painful" measures would have to be taken to make the organisation "fit for purpose".

"Like all not-for-profit organisations that have to earn all their own income, the MA goes through difficult times during an economic downturn," he said.

Taylor added that the decline in the recruitment advertising market had hit the MA hard. "We have to curtail expenditure to match income, and that may mean a reduction in some services and staff levels," he said.

"The MA council has made some proposals and is in consultation with staff and the union. We would hope to be clearer about where the changes will come in the next month or so."
