The annual round of grants awarded jointly to museums and galleries across England by the Wolfson Foundation and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) will be suspended in 2010-11.
The DCMS and Wolfson Foundation contribute £2m each to the Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund, which was launched in 2002.
A DCMS spokesman said: "This will allow both parties to assess what the fund has achieved in the past eight years and use this as a basis for looking at how it could add value in future years."
He added that future awards were dependent on the outcome of the Comprehensive Spending Review, which will be announced next year.
Among the 34 recipients of this year's awards, which were announced in late August, are: Bowes Museum in County Durham (£300,000); the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Cambridge (£250,000); the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (£240,000); Exeter City Museums & Art Gallery (£200,000); Beamish: The North of England Open Air Museum (£150,000); the Wiltshire Heritage Museum in Devizes (£150,000); and Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (£100,000).
