There are strong indications that the Art Fund will continue its sponsorship of the Art Fund Prize for museums and galleries after next year.
The Art Fund has sponsored the prize, previously known as the Gulbenkian, for the past two years, and 2010 is officially the last year of its sponsorship.
But a spokeswoman for the fund said although technically the sponsorship deal was due to end, the Art Fund was in "active discussions" with the trustees of the prize about extending the arrangement.
The Art Fund sponsors the prize to the tune of £200,000 a year, with an additional £50,000 coming from an anonymous donor. The prize has struggled to secure sponsorship in the past and commentators have suggested that it would be difficult to find new backers in the current financial climate.
Meanwhile, the latest call for entries to the prize opens on 5 October. A longlist of 10 will be unveiled in February, which will be whittled down to four in April. The winner will be announced in June.
