Art Fund repeats survey
The Art Fund is repeating its online survey that aims to gauge how museums and galleries are coping during the economic downturn. The poll, launched in the spring, hopes to address issues such as the number of "staycation" museum visits and whether museums are still collecting. The findings will be published in October.
Dudley funding snub
The Black Country Living Museum in Dudley has failed to secure £2.5m funding from the regional development agency Advantage West Midlands (AWM) for its 1930s High Street scheme.
"The last phase will be put on hold temporarily," said a museum spokeswoman. "We are confident that alternative funding can be found." The government has cut AWM's budget by £48m over the next two years.
Portsmouth visitors up
The number of visitors to Portsmouth's eight museums has increased by 40 per cent since this time last year to 76,630. A council spokeswoman attributed the rise to "free entry at Southsea Castle and D-Day 65 [anniversary event] at the D-Day museum".
New historic guidelines
The Department of Communities and Local Government has announced new guidelines for protecting the historic environment. The "first integrated planning policy" aims to safeguard historic "assets" such as Victorian stations. The new planning statement, which is accompanied by guidance from English Heritage, urges local authorities to create publicly accessible historic environment records.
