Titian's Diana and Actaeon, which was jointly purchased for £50m earlier this year by the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) and the National Gallery in London, is to go on show at various venues across Scotland including Glasgow.
The 16th-century painting, which was bought from the Duke of Sutherland (see link below), was originally going to be displayed in London and Edinburgh for eight-month periods until 2012.
But following an appeal from a member of the Scottish parliament, Bill Butler, the painting will now go on display in Glasgow and other Scottish venues.
A spokesman for Butler said: "Kelvingrove is the obvious choice, but nothing has been finalised."
A spokeswoman for the NGS said: "We are working on plans for several displays over a period of years."
The NGS contributed £4.6m towards the purchase. The National Gallery and Scottish government gave £12.5m each, while £7.4m came from public donations and individual trusts. The Art Fund £1m.
