Athelstan Museum in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, has axed both its paid staff as a result of a funding shortfall.
Contracts for curator Pippa Griffiths and education officer Christine Staff will not be renewed because the recession has made income difficult to secure, said Roger Griffin, chairman of the Friends of Athelstan Museum.
"We received 72 per cent of their salary package from the Heritage Lottery Fund for one year," said Griffin.
The local-history museum, a charitable trust which receives no state subsidies, relies on grants and trusts for financial support. Significant items in the collection include Tom Girton's drawing of the Malmesbury Market Cross, from about 1791, and a Roman coin depicting emperor Marcus Aurelius.
