The Salzburg Museum has been named the 2009 European Museum of the Year by the European Museum Forum (EMF).

An international committee of judges praised the urban- history museum's novel approach, which deconstructs the image of the Austrian city and focuses on its most famous citizens.

The awards ceremony took place on 9 May in the Turkish city of Bursa, at the EMF conference. The judges presented the Micheletti Award for a science or industrial museum of outstanding quality to the Museum of the Jaeren Region, in Naerbø, Norway.

Three finalists received special commendations from the judges. They were the Archaeological Centre of Almoina, Valencia, the Museum of Modern Art, Istanbul, and the Museum of Life Stories, Speicher, Switzerland.

There were five UK museums among the 30 finalists: Pallant House Gallery, Chichester; Shetland Museum and Archive; the Wellcome Collection, London; the International Slavery Museum, Liverpool; and the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon.
