More than 100 museums and galleries are expected to take part in this month's inaugural Museums at Night event.
The weekend of late openings and sleepovers, on 15-16 May, coincides with the Europe-wide La Nuit des Musées and replaces Museums and Galleries Month, which had its funding withdrawn last year.
The initiative has attracted a £15,000 grant from the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, and £8,000 from the National Museum Directors' Conference.
Jane Finnis, director of Culture 24, the event's organiser, said: "Museums are putting things on for people who don't normally go to museums."
Show Scotland takes place on 1-4 May, and organisers are hoping for record numbers, after a sponsorship deal with the Daily Record.
